Do I Need an EV Charging Station?

Owning an electric car can be a great investment. Not only can you save money in the long run on fuel, you’re also investing in the environment. Electric cars do not run on fuel but rather need to be plugged in to charge.

While there are some charging stations throughout Kentucky, there are benefits to having a charging station at your house. Being able to plug your electric car in at night can provide peace of mind and allow you to save time as compared to spending time at a public charging station. Simply charge your car while you sleep and have it ready to start your day.

What Options are Available For Home Charging Stations?

There are multiple choices for car charging stations. They come in all different shapes, sizes and voltages. The biggest decision will be deciding what voltage you need and want for your in-home charging station. There are benefits to different voltage levels. Using higher voltage means your car will charge faster, but it can also be more expensive to install.

Option 1 – 120V Charging Stations

These charging stations use a regular plug, just like most of the plugs in your home. It takes about 9 hours to charge your car for a 40-mile drive with the 120V charging station. If you don’t drive much or your commute is short then the 120V might be a good option that costs less to install. Simply charge your electric car while you sleep and it should be ready for up to 40 mile commute.

Option 2 – 240V Charging Stations

The next higher level voltage is 240V. 240v charging stations use the same type of plug as your washing machine does. They average about 10 miles per hour of charge. However, that number fluctuates based on the model of your electric car and with different brands of charging stations. This option could be best if your commute is longer, or if you’re not able to charge your car as often.

Option 3 – Specialized or Extra Powerful Charging Stations

Fayette Heating & Air has solutions for those looking for an even faster charge. Some models of electric cars, like Tesla, also have charging options specific to that vehicle. These may charge the vehicle faster or interface better with it. If your electric car requires specific home charging options, give us a call.
